The comic book Soli Deo Gloria (Dupuis), by author Jean-Christophe Deveney and illustrator Edouard Cour, is the winner of the 8th edition of the Fnac France Inter Comic Book Award. Together, they deliver a story of resilience in which music proves to be a glimmer of hope in the face of a harsh world.
Soli Deo Gloria: a moving comic book
Born into poverty in the Holy Roman Empire, Hans and Helma are two souls whose love of music is the only thing that saves them from a life of hard labor and poverty. After a family tragedy, their journey takes the form of an initiatory quest set to music: from discovering the sounds of nature with a hermit, to learning music theory in a religious boarding school, to discovering the beauty of instruments in the courtyard of a margrave. The story follows their rise and cruel disillusionment within the great palaces of Europe.
